Emotion norms for 6000 word meanings with a mapping to the Polish wordnet

The publication is one of the results of the project "Sentimenti - emotion analyzer for Polish texts" financed by the EU Intelligent Development Operational Program, realized with the participation of AMU employees.

The research was motivated by the fact that although the lexicons of emotions are extremely useful for research in many disciplines, their availability is still limited for most languages. While existing emotion lexicons typically comprise words, it is a particular meaning of a word (rather than the word itself) that conveys emotion. To mitigate this issue, we present the Emotion Meanings dataset, a novel dataset of 6000 Polish word meanings.  The article presents a set of emotion ratings for 6,000 word meanings (randomly selected from 30,000 ratings) for the Polish language. The meanings were taken from the Polish wordnet (plwordnet.pwr.wroc.pl/wordnet/). They were assessed by over 20,000 Poles in terms of valence (positive and negative) and arousal, and they were also assigned basic categories of emotions. These assessments were verified as highly reliable on the basis of statistical data analysis. The word meanings are further accompanied by the relevant metadata, derived from open-source linguistic resources. Direct mapping to Princeton WordNet makes the dataset suitable for research on multiple languages.  Altogether, this dataset provides a versatile resource that can be employed for emotion research in psychology, cognitive science, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics or natural language processing.
